Law firms are unlike any other business, and most consultants don’t recognize this critical fact. During Matthew’s time as a senior partner and member of management, he worked with a number of strategic consultants. They imposed a huge time and administrative burden on firm management in the process of generating analytics that yielded conclusions impossible to effectively implement in the context of a partnership. We, on the other hand, offer practical, experience-based advice. For example, a critical precondition to the success of any law firm initiative is getting buy-in from partners for changes that they can and WANT to implement. It is also essential to provide partners with the tools and incentives to follow through on the agreed changes and to coach and advise them as they navigate new protocols. We are not only there to identify what needs to be fixed but also remain to follow up and assist partners as they work to implement real change.
